Recently, a few things have happened that have gotz me thinking about stuff, and given that’s something of a rarity for me anyways, I’ve been struggling to deal with all the extra noise my brain’s been making. Usually content to speak to me in instructional, one-word phrases (“food!”, “Pee!”, “Thirsty”, and the like) all of a sudden it was asking me fucking questions, challenging me to consider complex, multidimensional issues, and no amount of me telling it to “get fucked” seemed to silence it. Ok, so first off: a confession. See, once I’d sat through the intro of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (which was pretty cool, btw), I came to my first big decision and – in a way that didn’t bode particularly well for the rest of my experience in general – I agonised over it for fucking ages. Like, a full half an hour. That decision was, of course, difficulty and…..well, it was difficult. I’ll freely admit I’m not the best Gamer in the world, but normally when I’m choosing a difficulty, there are several factors I’ll take into consideration; my experience with the genre (or franchise), whether I want to write a review quickly, how “big” the game is, how tired I am (a tired James often equates to an overly rubbish and/or rage-quitting James), and indeed, what the objectively perceived difficulty of the game in question is.
I’ve been playing Video Games for the best part of three decades, but in all that time I’ve somehow neglected to really partake of the RPG genre – particularly the epic Swords & Magickey type games. I’m quite a fan of fantasy fiction and films, so it’s a strange omission from my Gaming “career” really, but it’s just something that I’ve never really embraced. If I had to guess, I’d say that it’s possible I found the idea of them quite daunting – what with their length/difficulty/complicated upgrading system whatsits – and when I have tried them, there always seems to be a kind of assumption that I’d already know exactly how to deal with everything – which I most certainly didn’t. Despite the fact I’ve been pretty shonky of late in terms of output (and quality too, prob’ly), I’ve somehow managed to pick up a couple of community blogging awards which, as always, really mean a lot. It’s always nice to receive validation for what I always think of as my “clumsily stabbed out proto-thoughts” anyway, but when they come from fellow bloggers who I like and respect too, it’s that little bit more appreciated. Oh, Nintendo. Dear, sweet Nintendo. We’ve had a long relationship you and I! Indeed, you’re the main reason I’m a Gamer, and almost 30 years ago you were the one who took me by the hand, introduced me to a dude by the name of Mario, and together, in the space of a few short hours, you both showed me momentous, Life-changing things.
And whilst I appreciate that all sounds a bit like an episode of Law and Order: SVU, I mean it in a good, non-creepy way. In short (and like many people of my generation, I suspect), my own Gaming odyssey began with you, and you’ve always played some part in it throughout the years. There were some real highs, a few lows, but we’ve made it through together, and precisely because I love you, Nintendo, I want us to have a future too. I’ll shortly be heading to New York, New York (start spreading the news, etc, etc) – and in one of those (if my girlfriend should ask) *totes* accidental twists of fate, my time there will coincide exactly with the release of Sony’s PS4 Pro. Honestly, the timing couldn’t be better (almost like I’d planned it, making up some bullshit reason like ‘I’ve heard Central Park looks spectacular in the Fall….but only if you’re there in whatever week includes the 10th of November!’) and – availability permitting – I’d be overjoyed to get my stubby mits on Sony’s upgraded PlayStation. That said however, I’m currently wrestling with one of them internal dilemma whatsits that people (with generally more self-control than I) have when they’re deciding whether they really need to spend a chunk of cash on something-or-other. Recently, for reasons I won’t go into just now, I got involved with the Macmillan Cancer Support – Game Changers events. For those of you who may be less aware of the charity or the event, it’s quite straightforward. Macmillan is a charity that work hard on supporting individuals (and their families) who have been diagnosed with, are receiving treatment for, or are recovering from cancer. “Game Changers” is one of Macmillan’s fund raising schemes – people pledge to host or join a 24 hour gaming event and ask friends, family or total strangers to donate money to the charity in the name of you and your event.
I learned quite a lot from the experience and hope to pass on some of that wisdom to you – fair reader – in the hope that you may feel inspired to do the same; feel better prepared for what to expect from taking part in such an event; and maybe make an even better job of it than I did.
