I’m officially late to the Horizon Zero Dawn party (mostly thanks to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands’ initial addictiveness) and by the time I’d loaded it up, I’d already read thousands of words praising….well, pretty much everything about it. Obviously that raised my expectations somewhat, and a game I’d initially bought with a fair degree of ambivalence was now being talked about almost everywhere in Game Of The Year/Console Shifter type terms. So far, I’ve sunk about 20 hours into Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands and, to be quite honest, I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it. There are times when it feels like the most absorbing, smooth, addictive and thrilling game I’ve played in a while – yet there are others when it feels clumsy, repetitive and broken and, as a result, has raised the ‘controller thrown through TV’ danger level to Defcon: minus a bajillion. There isn’t much of a middle-ground it seems, so any given session can either be exhilarating, infuriating, or a mixture/average of both, and it’s making objective evaluation of the game somewhat problematic. I’ll often come out of it with only really great things to say, put that stuff in this piece, only to come out of the next session wanting to delete everything and just replace it all with a “for the love of God, don’t touch this game with a big fucking stick!‘ type of warning. I knew I’d been neglecting my Wii U, but it wasn’t until I went to set it all up again that I realised quite how much. See, the last time I turned it on was at least November of last year, and I know this because I couldn’t find my fucking transformers – which were always in the same place back when I needed them for my PlayStation 4 (prior to getting a Pro in the US). Hunting all over the house for the bastards wasn’t the most auspicious of starts to my WUFT-ing for sure, and at one point – when an avalanche of shit fell on my head from an overhead cupboard, if you’re interested – I very nearly fucked it all off before I’d even got started. Ok, let’s start with another confession: I’m possibly a bit addicted to Gwent. And when I say possibly, I mean definitely, and when I say a bit, I mean massively. If I’m being honest, I’ve spent waaaay too much of my recent The Witcher 3 experience playing a fucking card game. It’s not that I’ve got anything against card games per se, but a) I’ve got quite enough shit to be getting on with in the game, thankyouverymuch – and b) it’s really rather difficult to write about hours and hours of me playing cards and make it sound in any way interesting or exciting. Ok, so first off: a confession. See, once I’d sat through the intro of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (which was pretty cool, btw), I came to my first big decision and – in a way that didn’t bode particularly well for the rest of my experience in general – I agonised over it for fucking ages. Like, a full half an hour. That decision was, of course, difficulty and…..well, it was difficult. I’ll freely admit I’m not the best Gamer in the world, but normally when I’m choosing a difficulty, there are several factors I’ll take into consideration; my experience with the genre (or franchise), whether I want to write a review quickly, how “big” the game is, how tired I am (a tired James often equates to an overly rubbish and/or rage-quitting James), and indeed, what the objectively perceived difficulty of the game in question is.
First of all, may I take this opportunity to apologise if, in the following, I not wrote down words dead good. See, I’ve not slept properly for a few nights. The first night was just because I was quite excited to start playing Resident Evil 7, but the last few were because every damn time I closed my eyes, I was back in the dank, fetid and – quite frankly – horrific world of Resident Evil 7. It’s not that I scare easily, or even that I was “scared” per se, but having decided to play RE 7 in Virtual Reality, it all got into my head a bit. As I hope to explain in what follows, Resident Evil 7 is, in many ways, an excellent advert for Virtual Reality, and whilst I think this is a great game anyway, it’s a positively fucking brilliant VR experience. The general consensus seems to be that 2016 was, for want of a better phrase, a big old pile of shite, and whether your favorite actor died, or singer, or whether your preferred outcome in any given political event failed to happen, there were a lot of people who really wanted 2016 to just fuck the fuck off. That said however, as Gamers – who maybe survived the real world precisely by retreating into virtual ones – there were quite a few highlights in the year’s Gaming calendar. Indeed, given IRL shenanigans, it’s possible that Gaming took on a higher degree of importance in 2016, with post-apocalyptic games in particular becoming less of a hobby and more of, say, essential training and practice for things going very, very wrong in the real world. I think it’s fair to say that the Call of Duty games are something of a divisive element in the Gaming community nowadays. For some, the annual installment of Activision’s First Person Shooter – by whatever Developer – represents the very pinnacle of Gaming, what with their huge budgets, A-list casts and frenetic, non-stop action; and they are, as sales figures would strongly suggest, pounced upon by plenty of Gamers who can’t wait to test themselves in the Alpha, ubertwitch-ey arena of the world’s most pre-eminent Shooter. For others, however, they represent something close to an annual nadir – and for pretty much the same exact reasons – and for these people, CoD games are to be avoided like the plague; becoming something akin to a symbol of everything that’s wrong with the Gaming Industry.
There are yet others though, who kinda see both sides, indeed sometimes fluctuate between the two opposing viewpoints, but who will neither commit to – nor rule out – picking up a given installment a priori; choosing instead to see how shit plays out and whatnot. I already gave a brief rundown of Batman Arkham VR in my overall review of PlayStation VR, but I think it’s actually deserving of a full review in its own right.
