CounterSpy – Review

Aside from the obvious (that’ll be FREE games), one of the cool things about the whole PS+ games whatsit is that it can sometimes point you in the direction of titles you may have missed. I’d never heard of CounterSpy for example, so had it not been an offering this month, I’d almost certainly not have played it. Which would have been a real shame, because I really quite enjoyed it.

Set during the Cold War, you play as an agent working for a covert organisation Continue reading “CounterSpy – Review”

Valiant Hearts: The Great War – Review

There are, as I hope to demonstrate here, many reasons to give Valiant Hearts: The Great War a try, but one of them is undoubtedly the fact that it’s currently free for PS+ members in March, and to be honest, you can’t really argue with free. That being said though, and perhaps in testament to just how good it really is, that’s possibly not even the most compelling reason to play Valiant Hearts.

Make no mistake, this is an absolute gem of a game, Continue reading “Valiant Hearts: The Great War – Review”

Is The Order: 1886 a game, or an Interactive Movie?

Often, when trying to explain the appeal of games to a non-gamer, I fall back on the whole ‘it’s like an interactive movie’ chestnut. It’s a narrative that you get to join in with, influence, and thus ultimately experience on a deeper level than you can by just passively watching a film, I say, trying to sound deep. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – Full Review

In the interests of full disclosure, I’m quite the fan of all things Resident Evil-ey, so you should probably bear that in mind as you peruse the following review. In fact, such is my love of shooting zombies in the face that I even enjoyed Resident Evils 5 and 6.

There, I said it. Continue reading “Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – Full Review”

The Evil Within – Review

As you’d probably expect from Shinji Mikami (the brains behind the original Resident Evil game), The Evil Within is an almost textbook ‘survival horror’ game. It follows all of the genre’s usual conventions, sometimes to the point of being clichéd – in fact, often way, waaaay beyond the point of being clichéd. Strange goings-on in a mental hospital: check. Wandering around in a big ol’ creepy mansion: check. Mirrors that act as portals: check. Weird gloopy stuff on the walls, bad-ass baddies with considerably more arms/legs than you’d expect, lots of things trying to eat your brains: check, check, aaaaaannnd check!! Next-Gen Gaming: One Year Report Card

It’s nearly Christmas again, which is possibly some kind of mistake, because I’m pretty sure the last one was only a few days ago, but, more to the point, it’s now a year since Microsoft and Sony triumphantly thrust their next-gen consoles onto the market, and gaming (ostensibly) took a fairly significant leap forward. Continue reading “Next-Gen Gaming: One Year Report Card”

Video Games: The Movie – Review

A little while back, I caught the repeat of the excellent Discovery documentary series ‘Rise of the Video Game/I, Video Game’ (US/Europe), and I really, really enjoyed it. In fact, my only complaint was that, because it was few years old, I spent too much time shouting at the telly because someone would say something like, “I think at some point in the future we’ll possibly see x in a video game….”, and I’d be all like “WE ALREADY HAVE, INNIT!?Continue reading “Video Games: The Movie – Review”

Alien: Isolation – Bringing a franchise and a gaming genre back to its roots

You know how, when you’re a kid, you always have at least one friend whose parents let them watch films yours don’t, and accordingly sleeping over at theirs is infinitely cooler because of that fact, yeah!?
Well, for me, it was all great and whatnot, until one of those videos (like DVDs, but bigger) happened to be ‘Alien’, Continue reading “Alien: Isolation – Bringing a franchise and a gaming genre back to its roots”
