Weekend Gaming Doodah #2

Whilst last week’s Weekend Gaming Doodah wasn’t what you could (reasonably) call a resounding success, thanks to Pine717 and Particlebit (cheers guys) it wasn’t an abject failure either, so I’ma take another crack at it. And yes, I *am* sticking with that title ….

Huzzah – the weekend, it be here again, all bright and shiny and full of potential Gaming goodness. The drudgery and monotony of the real world can safely be put to one side – albeit fairly briefly – and we’re free to dive into whatever Gaming world we wish to explore unencumbered by, like, work and shit. In your face, The Man! Continue reading “Weekend Gaming Doodah #2”

Monday Morning Procrastination Pack

Even though it’s Carnaval here in Brazil (so I’m not even halfway through my 5 day weekend), I’m going to – out of the goodness of my heart, because that’s the kind of guy I am, etc, etc – provide you with a little bug-out bag of gaming essentials to help you survive the drudgery of the dreaded Monday. Rather than containing, say, bottled water, those silver blanket things, or a crossbow, this particular bug-out bag contains, like, words. Lots and lots of words. What I’m going to do – basically – is give you a little collection of Gaming-related stuff for you to surreptitiously read at work, in class, on your commute; essentially anywhere you choose where you feel it might alleviate the grimness that is Monday. The Weird Psychology of Trophies and Achievements

Having just read Particlebit’s review of Shadow of Mordor, I was randomly reminded that said game was my first ever Platinum trophy, and that got me thinking about how the trophy thing works – or at least the effect it has on me. See, back on last-gen I didn’t consistently have an Xbox Live subscription, so because that meant I couldn’t get all of the achievements for many games, I just wasn’t overly bothered about them. I mean, story related achievements would pop – and I’d be like, ‘Oh, that’s nice. Go me!‘ – and I’d usually get collectibles and such because of my gaming OCD, but it was rare that I’d even look at the achievement list for a given game, let alone try to get them all. Weekend Gaming Doodah!

If you’re reading this, welcome to the very first Weekend Gaming Doodah. This being some bona fide history-in-the-making shizzle, please feel obliged to conduct yourself with a degree of decorum suitably befitting of such a momentous occasion. Or, like, don’t – I’m not the boss of you! Anyways, what is this Weekend Gaming Doodah, and why such a formal title I hear you ask?! They’re fair questions young padawan, and – let the record show – it’s absolutely not something I just thought of because I’ve got fuck-all in the way of actual posts to publish, and it’s not an idea I shamelessly nicked from the Game section of the AV Club (or, indeed, every other Gaming site ever). Reasons Why Games Are Awesome No. 23, 456: Ongoing Gaming Narratives

Ahead of the (eagerly anticipated) release of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, I’ve been quickly “working” my way through Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. Yesterday, this came as something of a blessed relief after all the trauma of Ori and The Blind Forest, and it was nice to both have fun, and (if I’m being honest) to not to feel like I was an utterly incompetent and hilariously unskilled shitdribble. That’s great in and of itself, obviously, but it also got me thinking about the idea of Ongoing Narrative in Games, and just quite how it all works. And It’s Hi Ho Silver Lining! (Or Some such…)

So, after 6000 miles, some pretty dodgy airline (quote-unquote) “food”, and watching a surprising number of my fellow travellers being hilariously stumped by the apparent complexities of airplane toilet doors, I’m back home – and that means I can now get on with the task of rebuilding my Gaming life. Having schlepped my replacement PS4 across the equator (along with some re-bought games, headphones etc) and with my replacement Xbox One eagerly awaiting me here, I’m just about back where I was – hardware-ily speaking anyways. I spent yesterday reconnecting everything, waiting an inordinate amount of time for updates and shit to download, and now, having checked my USB stick on the off-chance I had saved my Fallout 4 stuff but finding I hadn’t, I’ve finally accepted that a) I am definitely an idiot, and b) I’m back to square one in terms of Next-Gen Gaming. Why Should You Read Gaming Blogs? The Answers Will Shock You…..

Having read a post over at The Aimless Gamer (a place you should totally check out, by the way), I gotz to thinking about this whole blogging malarkey, and more specifically, what I find so compelling about bloggers and blogs. The Internet is vast, and the number of places in it reserved for gaming-related things is mahoosive, yet I find myself increasingly eschewing the more well-known of these sites in favour of smaller, blog-ey type ones. Why is that, I wondered? What is it about – for want of a better word – these amateur sites that I’m drawn to; why do I prefer to spend my time reading personal, largely unfunded sites rather than the massive, bells-and-whistles ones instead? How The Hell Do I Choose Which Games to Buy Again?

In some ways, the first year of Next-Gen felt like the gaming equivalent of being stuck in an airport for me. By that I mean that it was often characterised by large periods of waiting; periods in which I’d be sort-of half-heartedly doing bits and pieces just to pass the time/fend off boredom until the next significant event happened. Games seemed to trickle into stores at a fairly leisurely pace (at the time it felt like a positively fucking glacial pace), and with various delays and such being a factor too, the first few months of being a PS4 owner were never what you could reasonably call a time of plenty and abundance. Learning from my Mistakes: Use the Cloud

So….. I’m a fucking idiot, me! For loads of reasons, admittedly, but most recently because, despite being obsessed with Fallout 4, and despite having sunk many, many hours into the game – slowly, painstakingly conquering the wasteland, leveling up, and building settlements – I didn’t even bother to take the 10 seconds necessary to back up my save file; cloudularly or hard-driveularly. Continue reading “Learning from my Mistakes: Use the Cloud”
