RIP Ralph Baer, The Father of Video Games

Depending on when and where you began your love affair with gaming, you might have different ideas of who you consider to be a pioneer, or visionary. What’s certain, however, is that whoever they were, they were standing on the shoulders of Ralph Baer, the father of video games, and the guy responsible for starting it all. More ‘No Man’s Sky’ Footage Revealed

Yesterday, I got to use the old “Christmas came early” chestnut (see what I did there? Christmas/chestnuts?? Anybody???) and today it seems I get to use “the gift that keeps on giving” line. Why? Well, after I’d already posted the first new No Man’s Sky gameplay trailer, Hello Games continued to wow audiences, previewing yet another trailer, before positively hitting it out of the park with the ‘A night under No Man’s Sky’ event on Saturday night.

I wasn’t at the event (I couldn’t find a buyer for my kidney in time), Continue reading “More ‘No Man’s Sky’ Footage Revealed”

No Man’s Sky: Incoming Data Transmission

If, like me, you’re already a fan of the forthcoming No Man’s Sky from Hello Games, Christmas came early this weekend, with a new trailer landing at The Game Awards on Friday night. Featuring actual in-game footage, and several bajillion layers of awesome, it all looks as good as we’d expect it to. Continue reading “No Man’s Sky: Incoming Data Transmission”

Video Games: The Movie – Review

A little while back, I caught the repeat of the excellent Discovery documentary series ‘Rise of the Video Game/I, Video Game’ (US/Europe), and I really, really enjoyed it. In fact, my only complaint was that, because it was few years old, I spent too much time shouting at the telly because someone would say something like, “I think at some point in the future we’ll possibly see x in a video game….”, and I’d be all like “WE ALREADY HAVE, INNIT!?Continue reading “Video Games: The Movie – Review”

Alien: Isolation – Bringing a franchise and a gaming genre back to its roots

You know how, when you’re a kid, you always have at least one friend whose parents let them watch films yours don’t, and accordingly sleeping over at theirs is infinitely cooler because of that fact, yeah!?
Well, for me, it was all great and whatnot, until one of those videos (like DVDs, but bigger) happened to be ‘Alien’, Continue reading “Alien: Isolation – Bringing a franchise and a gaming genre back to its roots”

No Man’s Sky: Freedom is a Good Thing

Ok, so we know that No Man’s Sky is going to be really (really, reeeeeeally) big, we know that it’s created using some breathtakingly impressive procedural generation and maths-ey type stuff, and we know that it looks stunning, but what about all the actual gameplay?! What will we be doing, be able to do, in the midst of all this superlative size, quality, scenery and suchlike? Continue reading “No Man’s Sky: Freedom is a Good Thing”

No Man’s Sky: Approaching Infinity

I’ve been told (about a billion times) that I’m slightly prone to the odd bit of exaggeration, so when I said that No Man’s Sky was, essentially, an infinite universe, there’s a slight chance that some people might not have taken me entirely seriously. Sean Murray, founder of Hello Games recently backed me up however, by suggesting that No Man’s Sky could take 5 billion years to fully explore. Continue reading “No Man’s Sky: Approaching Infinity”

Fallout 4: Rumours and Guestimations

Given I’ve already gone on record as being “a bit keen” on Fallout, it might not come as a huge surprise that Fallout 4 is one of the games I’m most looking forward to. It’s been six years since Fallout 3 hit the shelves, and four since Fallout: New Vegas debuted, which equates to…(*does “math” face*)….. well, to a lot of long, post-apocalyptic-wasteland-free hours in between. Continue reading “Fallout 4: Rumours and Guestimations”

Do Games, and Gamers Deserve More Respect?

Not everyone’s into football/soccer, and that’s fine, but for those of us who are, the World Cup is, undoubtedly, the most highly-anticipated event in the footballing calendar. Every four years, the World’s greatest players gather in the same place, and we get to watch a veritable festival of the beautiful game (plus, sometimes, England games too) played out over four glorious weeks. Continue reading “Do Games, and Gamers Deserve More Respect?”
