Call of Duty: Black Ops III – First Impressions

Black Ops III will mark the CoD franchise’s third foray into Next-Gen gaming, and the previous two proved at least as popular as ever – thus answering Edwin Starr’s eternal question (‘War…..HUH…..what is it good for?’) with a resounding ‘selling shitloads of video games, innit!?’. Whether you’re a fan of the series or not, I think it’s fair to say that the CoD games (from whichever developer) have really been nailing their next-gen shizzle, truly embracing – and pushing – what the new machines are capable of.

From what I saw, Black Ops 3 seems to be no different in that respect. Continue reading “Call of Duty: Black Ops III – First Impressions”

Street Fighter V – Hands On First Look

As a young ‘un, I must have spent in excess of a 100 hours playing on Street Fighter, and likely a hundred more on Street Fighter II – and they were probably the first games that really got me hooked on the medium. I’d always liked playing on earlier “games” – in an enjoyable enough to spend a few hours messing around kind of way – but it was the first two Street Fighters that turned Gaming into a full-time, hardcore obsession for me. Halo 5: Guardians – Hands On, First Look at Multiplayer

Tucked away in a tiny corner of the Xbox area at the Brasil Game Show is a curtain. I’m not what you could call a big fan of curtains – you know, generally speaking – but this one I liked. A lot. See, behind this particular curtain was my opportunity to have a first little look-see at Halo 5: Guardians Multiplayer. Yeah, I know right!? Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate – Hands On First Look

On Thursday I was lucky enough to have me a little go on the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, the next installment in the über-popular franchise from Ubisoft. All told, I got to play for around twenty minutes (10 minutes x 2, if anyone’s interested), and whilst it’s sometimes problematic to extrapolate from such a small sample, I’ma go right ahead and say it was definitely enough to get me pretty excited about the game.

The first thing that became obvious to me was that it looked fantastic. Even playing on a relatively small (and not particularly great) screen, I was extremely impressed with the quality of the graphics, and particularly with the (fairly obvious) time and effort that had gone into lovingly recreating Victorian era London. Brasil Game Show 2015 – Day One Highlights

There are things that Brazil does really well, and some things it doesn’t and, generally speaking, ‘organising stuff’ has an unfortunate tendency to fall into the latter category. Even though, eg. the World Cup (for the most part) went well in the end, the general consensus was that there was a distinct element of luck in that. And, at this point, it looks very much like the Olympics could go either way.

Accordingly, my (ridiculous) levels of excitement for this year’s Brasil Game Show were, in some small way, tempered by a niggling sense of doubt and apprehension. I knew there was going to be some really cool stuff on offer Continue reading “Brasil Game Show 2015 – Day One Highlights”

Why isn’t every game like Fallout?

Because of the regional restrictions on Xbox 360 games, I tend to binge buy mine once or twice a year. A couple of years ago, it just so happened that the night before one of these splurges, I was talking to my best friend, who mentioned that one of his colleagues had become, and I quote, “unhealthily obsessed” with the Fallout games, and had all but withdrawn from the real world in favour of spending every available minute in a post-apocalyptic, virtual one.

Roughly twelve hours later, standing in a well-known game store, I noticed that Fallout 3 was on sale for £10. Now, rather than paying heed to what a more sensible person might consider a cautionary tale, Continue reading “Why isn’t every game like Fallout?”

Call of Duty: Ghosts – Review (Campaign)

For a while now, I’ve sort of seen Call of Duty as the gaming world’s equivalent of the Fast and Furious franchise. And by that I mean that a) there seems to be loads of them (essentially at least one new version released every year), b) they’re glossy, shiny and full of high-octane explosions and whatnot, and c) neither of them are what you could call “intellectually challenging” (or at least not with a straight face, anyway).

Lest I be misunderstood, I don’t necessarily think this is a bad thing. Indeed, sometimes with games Continue reading “Call of Duty: Ghosts – Review (Campaign)”

Wolfenstein: The New Order – Review

As a young ‘un, I spent many a happy hour shooting Nazis in the face on Wolfenstein 3D, and I vividly remember passing entire weekends in front of my friend’s Amiga as we took it in turns to fight our way out of basement after basement of the Third Reich’s mega prison complex (whilst one of us did the shooting, the other would be strategically positioned near the door listening for approaching adults, thus allowing us to leap into ‘doing our homework’ position before getting rumbled). Why you should definitely consider the Wii U

The other night, I noticed that I had two weird looking lines on the sides of my face that hadn’t been there that morning, and their presence left me feeling slightly confused, and more than a little freaked out. Searching “weird face diseases” on WebMD had left me none the wiser, and it was only later, when I’d been asked why I was ‘grinning like a simpleton’ that I finally figured it out!
As somebody who usually smiles, on average, three, maybe four times a year, it was understandable that I’d not considered this, but suddenly it all made sense Continue reading “Why you should definitely consider the Wii U”
