Possibly due to some kind of mix-up, I’ve somehow managed to get me some tickets for the Brasil Game Show this year, and I think it’s fair to say I’m more than a little bit excited about it. For Gamers big conventions are basically our version of these “Music Festivals” whatsits that the kids seem to like so much, and for five glorious days Continue reading “Brasil Game Show 2015 – Things to Look Forward to!”
Not that long ago, whenever some non-gamer type would get all judgey about how much money I, quote-unquote, “wasted” on games and stuff, I’d be more than happy to point out (at great length) how completely and utterly stupid they were being. ‘Yes’, I would say (rolling my eyes a lot for emphasis) ‘the hardware can be expensive, but after that initial outlay, games represent excellent value for money, both absolutely, and relative to other forms of entertainment’. Because of the regional restrictions on Xbox 360 games, I tend to binge buy mine once or twice a year. A couple of years ago, it just so happened that the night before one of these splurges, I was talking to my best friend, who mentioned that one of his colleagues had become, and I quote, “unhealthily obsessed” with the Fallout games, and had all but withdrawn from the real world in favour of spending every available minute in a post-apocalyptic, virtual one.
Roughly twelve hours later, standing in a well-known game store, I noticed that Fallout 3 was on sale for £10. Now, rather than paying heed to what a more sensible person might consider a cautionary tale, Continue reading “Why isn’t every game like Fallout?”
For a while now, I’ve sort of seen Call of Duty as the gaming world’s equivalent of the Fast and Furious franchise. And by that I mean that a) there seems to be loads of them (essentially at least one new version released every year), b) they’re glossy, shiny and full of high-octane explosions and whatnot, and c) neither of them are what you could call “intellectually challenging” (or at least not with a straight face, anyway).
Lest I be misunderstood, I don’t necessarily think this is a bad thing. Indeed, sometimes with games Continue reading “Call of Duty: Ghosts – Review (Campaign)”
As a young ‘un, I spent many a happy hour shooting Nazis in the face on Wolfenstein 3D, and I vividly remember passing entire weekends in front of my friend’s Amiga as we took it in turns to fight our way out of basement after basement of the Third Reich’s mega prison complex (whilst one of us did the shooting, the other would be strategically positioned near the door listening for approaching adults, thus allowing us to leap into ‘doing our homework’ position before getting rumbled). The other night, I noticed that I had two weird looking lines on the sides of my face that hadn’t been there that morning, and their presence left me feeling slightly confused, and more than a little freaked out. Searching “weird face diseases” on WebMD had left me none the wiser, and it was only later, when I’d been asked why I was ‘grinning like a simpleton’ that I finally figured it out!
As somebody who usually smiles, on average, three, maybe four times a year, it was understandable that I’d not considered this, but suddenly it all made sense Continue reading “Why you should definitely consider the Wii U”
Aside from the obvious (that’ll be FREE games), one of the cool things about the whole PS+ games whatsit is that it can sometimes point you in the direction of titles you may have missed. I’d never heard of CounterSpy for example, so had it not been an offering this month, I’d almost certainly not have played it. Which would have been a real shame, because I really quite enjoyed it.
Set during the Cold War, you play as an agent working for a covert organisation Continue reading “CounterSpy – Review”
There are, as I hope to demonstrate here, many reasons to give Valiant Hearts: The Great War a try, but one of them is undoubtedly the fact that it’s currently free for PS+ members in March, and to be honest, you can’t really argue with free. That being said though, and perhaps in testament to just how good it really is, that’s possibly not even the most compelling reason to play Valiant Hearts.
Make no mistake, this is an absolute gem of a game, Continue reading “Valiant Hearts: The Great War – Review”
Often, when trying to explain the appeal of games to a non-gamer, I fall back on the whole ‘it’s like an interactive movie’ chestnut. It’s a narrative that you get to join in with, influence, and thus ultimately experience on a deeper level than you can by just passively watching a film, I say, trying to sound deep. Continue reading “Is The Order: 1886 a game, or an Interactive Movie?”
